Journal 2017

Monday, January 9, 2017 / Austin, TX

Had a nice jam session with Richard Mikel and Daniel Dufour today - we've got a gig coming up in Houston with Woody Witt in February that's going to be a lot of fun. Quartets are so easy! I'm done with quintets and sextets for a while - it's a whole lot of work and getting people together is a total pain in the ass, especially for a sextet. I forgot to take pictures of the session but next time......Here's a few picks of what I've been up to for the past year or so.

Getting ready to start traveling again on Tuesday. Boston for BTOT (Berklee Teachers on Teaching) for a few hours Wednesday then renting a car to drive to Vermont to visit my mom. Been organizing my studio space in Austin and began a new term of Berklee Online so have been grading assignments and also have a couple of online private students. Austin Community College and UT/Austin teaching supposed to begin next week but I'll have to do makeups since I'll be away about for 8 days. I'm still finding it hard to believe 2016 is over. It was a landmark year - totally fucked up in so many ways but a lot of self discovery. There were many late nights (pretty much every night) that I was surprised by the fact that I made it through another impossible day. 2016 was the year to man-up. A motherfucker of a year. One minute I might feel like I was indestructible and the next like I couldn't possibly handle one more fucking minute as an intact human being. But throughout everything one absolute necessity for me was music. At the end of the day, no matter how burnt to a crisp I might be, playing music let me forget all the bad stuff and it gave me the will to face one more endless....fucking....day.

And throughout I never forgot (and continue to remind myself daily) how lucky I am.

Going through my pictures and found a few that were interesting.
